About Ghana Health Service
In 1992, the Republic of Ghana’s Constitution (Chapter 14) paved the way for the creation of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) as a component of Ghana’s Public Services. The year 1996 marked a significant milestone in the history of Ghana’s healthcare system, as Parliament passed the Ghana Health Service and Teaching Hospitals Act 1996, Act 525. This legislation was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the establishment of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), an organization that has since played a vital role in the provision of healthcare services to the Ghanaian populace.
Established by the 1992 constitution, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) is a public service organization created under Act 525 of 1996. The Ghana Health Service is a self-governing Executive Agency that carries out the implementation of national policies. Its operations are overseen by the Ghana Health Service Council, which is under the purview of the Minister for Health.
