WAEC Releases BECE 2023 Results

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the 2023 BECE results. The preliminary results for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for both school and private applicants are now available.

How is the BECE 2022 results calculated?

School candidates will receive results through their Metropolitan/Municipal/District Directors of Education, while private candidates can check on the official website.

WAEC canceled the subject results of 312 school candidates and 3 private candidates due to exam malpractices, including the use of unauthorized materials and collusion. Investigations into these cases were completed, leading to the cancellations.

A statement from WAEC, dated November 9, 2023, and signed by Mr. John Kapi, the Head of Public Affairs, gave a break down of the various irregularities that led to the cancellation and suspension of some examination scripts.

According to the aforementioned statement, 112 BECE results – 2023 have been withheld for suspected offenses. Meanwhile, scripts belonging to 22,270 candidates in certain subjects are under scrutiny following reported cases of mass cheating.

A final decision concerning these candidates have not be made yet but their results may be released or canceled based on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

A total of 600,900 candidates entered the school examination, with 300,404 males and 300,496 females from 18,993 schools. This includes 53 visually impaired, 366 with hearing impairment, and 54 with other special needs. The examination took place at 2,137 centers across the country, with 3,366 candidates absent.

The BECE for Private Candidates had 1,839 entries, comprising 942 males and 897 females. Fifteen centers, mainly in regional capitals, conducted the examination, with 61 candidates absent.

WAEC encourages candidates to check their results and advises schools to collect results from Directors of Education.
