Poultry farmers urge government to revitalise the local poultry industry.
The Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association is urging the government to act quickly and forcefully to resurrect the formerly thriving sector.
The call follows news that the government has abandoned its 30% benchmark value reduction policy, according to reports from the importers and exporters group.
Players in the nation’s poultry industry have frequently complained about the unfair competition they face from imported goods, which are frequently less expensive than domestic items. This makes it challenging for local players to enjoy a majority market share and expand their operations.
Due to the difficulty in obtaining feed due to a lack of maize and the avian flu outbreak, the poultry sector experienced numerous setbacks last year and was on the point of collapse.

In an interview with Accra-based CitiTV Citi Business News, a board member of the Greater Accra Poultry Framers Association, Kwame Ntim Duoduo, said the government must pay attention to the industry to help it expand.
“If the government were to meet the poultry farmers and work out the math together of how much maize is needed for the industry that will be a solution to the shortages we have been having”.
He added, “Also for the industry to grow then the government may say in one or two years we want to reduce importation of poultry by this amount, so position yourselves to fill that space so that amount of chicken which will no longer be imported in Ghana so farmers should take that up so before any policy changes like the benchmark then farmers can make up for that shortfall so we have to work together”
