Job Description

Job Purpose

To coordinate and supervise the Drill and Blast aspect of the operations from design of the drill panel through to the bench being mined to ensure that all blasts are optimized to achieve the downstream benefits and meeting health safety and environmental guidelines and preventing pit wall damage due to blast.

To evaluate and propose drill & blast solutions in achieving planned objectives and perform QAQC checks in stopes for continuous improvement and optimize ore extraction.

Primary Accountabilities (Duties & Responsibilities)

  • Review and approval of drill and blast design by contractor.
  • Monitor explosives stock level to ensure adequate quantities on site.
  • QA/QC of drill holes prior to charging and QA/QC on explosives (density, gassing etc).
  • Ensure that walls are properly battered and toes are achieved prior to signing off for a drill pattern to be marked for a trim or pre-split drilling.
  • Review and sign off explosives requisition and tie-up plan.
  • Post blast review and analysis on fragmentation and dig-rates of generated muck.
  • Provide accurate reports on operations on daily, weekly, monthly and periodic basis as required.
  • Perform any other related duties based on the exigencies of the Company as assigned by the Supervisor.

Required Skills or Experience

Minimum qualification (s)
  • B.Sc in Mining Engineering
  • Blasting Certificate of Competency from the Inspectorate Division of Minerals Commission
Experience (Minimum)
  • Four (4) years’ experience in Drill & Blast operations in an open pit mine
  • Valid driving license Class B or above
Knowledge (In-depth)
  • In depth knowledge on drill and blasting operations, mine to mill concept ability to manage the drill and blast team
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team and conduct risk assessments.
  • Track record of implementing continuous improvement projects in drill and blast.
  • Proficient with Drill & blast Software for blast design (preferably Datamine and Surpac, Shotplus, Rioblast, etc) for blast design and tie-up plan and knowledge of MS Office Suites.
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of the Duty of Care Standards, Occupational Health & Safety Regulations 2012 L.I. 2182, L.I. 2177 and Mining Inspection Act & Regulations.
  • Must have thorough understanding of open pit mining operations, and solid safety performance at the personal and professional level.
  • Understanding of Mining Health & Safety Procedures.
