GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

Under the direct supervision of the Agronomist, the Agric Production Manager will work with small holder farmers in Ghana to produce and market high-value crops using climate smart agricultural practices coupled with agricultural extension advice. The Agric Production Manager will be involved in the daily management of the farming activities, provide technical agronomic, irrigation trainings to Farm Business Coordinators (FBCs), also supervise the activities of Village Savings and Loan Associations and nutrition trainings

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Reports directly to the Agronomist.
  • Directly manages the Farm Business Coordinators

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (MODIFICATIONS MAY BE MADE AT ANY TIME)

  • With guidance from Supervisor, identify and recruit farm communities with water access for iDE- Korsung all year-round farming activities.

  • In consultation with supervisor, implement the iDE- Korsung production plan with farmers including trainings on agricultural practices such as land preparation, bed & nursery preparation, transplanting, pest & disease control, harvesting & post-harvest activities.
  • With support from Supervisor, select and produce plant varieties with high yield and disease/insect tolerant characteristics.
  • Conduct trainings to farmers on irrigation and coordinate farming and production protocols during the dry season farming.
  • With support from supervisor, analyse soil to determine type and quantity of fertilizers, and inputs required for high productivity.
  • Promote regenerative practices that promote crop and soil health for environmental sustainability.
  • Facilitate contracts with farmers per independent owners for crop production and sale of harvested crops to the market.
  • Facilitate recruitment of Farm Business Advisors in line with IDE technical requirements.
  • Provide a monthly field report of production activities and farm management practices.
  • Liaise with the Operations & Procurement team for the Purchase of inputs such as seeds, fertilizer, chemicals, and other supplies to ensure smooth operation of the farm activities.

  • With support from supervisor, facilitate linkages with mechanization service providers, inputs suppliers, seed growers, aggregators for timely delivery to farmers.
  • Supervise the operations of the Village Saving and Loans Association groups at the community levels.
  • With support from supervisor, work with WIAD and GHS to train women on household nutritional practices.
  • With support from supervisor, work with stakeholders to mainstream gender into iDE Korsung project activities
  • Perform any other related activities to this role.

Required Skills or Experience

  • BSc degree in Agricultural science, Horticulture, Farm Management or related discipline OR industry related experience.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in Field Crops and horticulture farming
  • 1- 2 years’ experience with managing commercial farms of 10 acres and above
  • Experience with data logging of farm work progress and farm metrics.
  • Familiarity with working on crop production protocols and cost estimation.
  • Interpersonal skills in managing stakeholder relationships on the farm. • Read and execute production plans and project management tools
  • Conversant with data entry tools and using Microsoft office tools.
  • Ability to apply research proven techniques to implement farm work.
  • Teamwork and leadership
  • Good written and communication skills
  • Ability to speak Dagbani language fluently.
