  • Job Location: Tamale with frequent day and overnight travel to other districts and rural areas

Reporting line relationships:

  • Reports directly to the Agric Program Manager
  • As a member of the Agriculture Team, works in close collaboration with the Farm Managers, Market & Value Chain Coordinator, Farm Business Coordinators GESI & Design Coordinator and Head of Measurement Evidence Research Learning to achieve project deliverables within the set timelines.
  • Direct reports include Farm Business Coordinators on technical aspects of farm production and productivity process.

General Job Description 
  1. Under the direct supervision of the Agric Program Manager, the Agronomist will work with farmers in Ghana to produce and market high-value crops using climate smart technologies coupled with agricultural extension services.
  2. The Agronomist will be directly involved in farming activities and provide technical agronomic trainings to Farm Business Advisors (FBA) and farmers, and to work closely with Agro inputs dealership firms and suppliers for purposes of sourcing and supplying the most appropriate farm inputs to farmers to enhance high productivity of crops.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities (modifications may be made at any time)
  • Be the lead in all aspects of agricultural technical discussion and decision making for IDE Ghana.
  • Lead in designing agronomy specific training guidelines for crops that may fall within the scope of IDE Ghana’s operations.
  • Provides backstopping to Farm Managers and Farm Business Coordinators on all technical aspect of agronomy as may relate to IDE Ghana programing.
  • Ensure there is appropriate technical structures in place for knowledge uptake to ensure optimum crop yield potentials are met to for maximum profitability.
  • Build and maintain relationship with relevant agro input companies to incorporate the best proven agro inputs and technologies relevant for the growth of the Ag. Portfolio.
  • Training of Farm Business Coordinators on good agriculture practices, post-harvest handling, pest Identification and control (Including Integrated Pest Management including regenerative agricultural practices)

  • Support to develop impactful, cost effective and scalable market access models for the cereals and vegetable value chains using iDE Agric tactics and strategy.
  • Work with Program Manager, Farm Managers, and other relevant team members to define the specific technical and extension strategy for reaching maximum benefits of targeted crops and irrigation performance.
  • Identify new potential agricultural challenges which might affect productivity, like invasive insects and diseases, and keeps informed about best controls while continuously updating the Farm Managers.

  • With support from Farm Managers, lead the Farm Business Coordinators to develop workable monthly plans based on requirements of the production season.
  • Supervise the technical reporting of Farm Managers, Farm Business Coordinators and ensure a two-way information flow that ensures feedback on all additional information which should be collected from the field.
  • Build and maintain stakeholder relationships with partners such as MoFA, CABI, SARI, CSIR etc as may be necessary for providing the needed technical guidance for Ag. Programming within IDE Ghana.

Required Skills or Experience

  • Graduated from a recognized university/ accredited tertiary institution with degree in Agronomy or Agriculture Technology or related field.
  • At least 4 years’ work experience in Horticulture production, Soil & Crop science, Agric business and other related fields.
  • Available for regular travel within Northern Regions of Ghana.
  • Experience working in rural areas and with Small Holder Farmers is an asset.
  • Excellent spoken and written English.
  • Ability to speak/communicate in the one or more related local language from the north (Dagbani, Manpruli, Dagaari, Waali, Frafra/Gruni, and kusal) of Ghana is a plus.
  • Advanced knowledge in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Collaborative and thrives in a team environment where ideas build on one another.
  • Excited by and open to new ideas and new ways of doing things.
