How The KNUST University Hall Came By The Name KATANGA.

Many people think the proper name for KNUST’s first all-male hall is Katanga. The University Hall, as the building is officially known, made its debut on January 19, 1963.
Let’s go back in time to learn how Katanga came to be the name of the hall.

At the time the hall was inaugurated, the Congo conflict was at its height.
A province of the Congo named Katanga was striving to break away from the recently established state. The region saw itself to be in charge of more than half of Congo’s revenue and required independence.

As a result, the building was given the name KATANGA by the University Hall’s founding students in honour of the province’s abundant mineral wealth. This was an effort to demonstrate the diversity of the hall’s residents and alumni.

However, there has been a misconception over the years that the Katanga moniker was chosen as a result of the province’s rebellious spirit. This is due to a few fellows’ engagement in scandalous activities on and around the KNUST campus.

In the 2018/2019 academic year, the university Hall,Katanga Hall, was converted into a mixed hall.
