The three most successful schools in NSMQ history.

The National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) is the oldest and most popular quiz competition contested annually by Senior High Schools in Ghana since 1994.

With almost an over 25-year history, some schools have been more successful in the academic contest than others.

The three most successful schools in NSMQ history.

1. Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (PRESEC) – Six (6) trophies.

Presec, Legon has appeared in ten finals, winning six of them, and becoming first runner-up four times. On Thursday, October 8, 2020, the PRESEC boys won a record-expanding sixth NSMQ trophy. The NSMQ was also won by PRESEC in 1995, 2003, 2006, 2008, and 2009. Their finals winning percentage is 60%. 

2. Prempeh College, Kumasi – Four (5) trophies

Prempeh College has made it to the finals six times, winning five times and finishing second once. Prempeh won the NSMQ’s inaugural competition in 1994 and went on to win it four more times. In 1996, 2015, 2017, and 2021 they won. In the finals, they have an 83.3% winning rate.

3. St. Peter’s Senior High School, Nkwatia – Three (3) trophies

St. Peters has competed in eight finals, winning three times, becoming first runner-up four times, and placing second once. The NSMQ champions in 2018 were St. Peter’s, who had previously won in 2000 and 2005.

4. Opoku Ware SHS, Mfantsipim School, Cape Coast, and Achimota School, Accra and St. Augustine’s College, Cape Coast – Two (2) trophies

Opoku Ware won the NSMQ in the year 1997 and 2002 while Mfantsipim claimed it in 1999 and 2014.

Achimota was successful in the NSMQ final in 1998 and 2004.

St Augustine’s College won it in 2007 and 2019.

5. One (1) trophy – Four (4) schools

Five schools have won the NSMQ once. The schools are; Pope John SHS, Koforidua, Ghana Secondary Technical School, Takoradi, Adisadel College and St Thomas Aquinas SHS.

Other facts

  • No girls’ school has won the trophy
  • Aquinas is the only exclusively day school to have won the trophy.
  • Opoku Ware School has been to the finals eight times, winning only two. This makes them the Juventus( in UCL) of NSMQ.
  • Adisadel College has only once won the trophy despite appearing in six finals.

Has any Girl School won NSMQ Before?

Achimota School is the only coeducational school to have won the competition. No all-girls’ school has ever won the competition. Only 11 schools in Ghana have won the competition since its inception.
