The Durham University Hatfield Lioness Scholarship is available to girls who possess the academic and personal qualities necessary to successfully complete and benefit from a postgraduate programme.
Additionally, students are expected to represent their home nation well while they are in Durham and to use Durham’s resources and their newly acquired knowledge and abilities to advance their home country’s society after they return home.
The award was established as part of the celebration of Hatfield College, University of Durham, welcoming female students for 30 years. It is supported by alumni, friends of the institution, and other sources who share the goals of the scholarship.

Scholarship Details:
Durham University in England has a college called Hatfield College. It was the second college affiliated with the university after University College and was established in 1846 by David Melville.
The Lioness Scholarship will be given by Hatfield College to a student who exhibits the intellectual and personal traits necessary to complete and profit from a postsecondary training programme.
Furthermore, he or she can serve as a positive ambassador to his or her own nation in Durham.
Scholarship Requirements:
To be considered for the scholarship;
- Applicants must have applied for and been offered an unconditional place on their chosen master’s programme by June 2023.
- Applicants must not be in receipt of any other scholarship to fund their postgraduate studies.

Applicants should:
- Hold a relevant honours degree of sufficient standard to be admitted to your chosen Master’s course ; and
- Have all other course entry requirements including the relevant English language qualification;
- Not hold a Master’s degree; and
- Not otherwise have the financial means to study for a Master’s degree in the UK
Selection Criteria: Applications will be considered on: academic merit, personal qualities and fit with the chosen degree programme to the candidate’s aims.

Scholarship Duration and Reward
The scholarship will cover:
- Full payment of University tuition fees
- Stipend for living expenses – 12 monthly payments
- One return economy air ticket from the home country to the UK, and the cost of return travel between the UK airport and Durham City
- Fully funded, self-catered, mixed accommodation at Hatfield College
- ‘Settling in allowance’ on arrival
- Cost of UK visa and the UK Health Surcharge
Restrictions:
- The Scholarship does not provide funding for dependants, nor for travel during the Scholarship
- Accommodation is for the Scholarship holder only; dependants cannot be accommodated
