MSc Funded Position: Snowshoe Hare Population Ecology on Isle Royale National Park at University of Wisconsin-Madison

The repatriation of wolves to Isle Royale represents a unique opportunity to quantify the effects of wolves not only for their main prey (moose), but also for other mammals that inhabit the island. We are currently studying the response of martens and foxes to wolf repatriation and are now recruiting a MSc graduate student to join our team to study the drivers behind the population dynamics of snowshoe hares.

The selected candidate will analyze historical and ongoing survey data of snowshoe hare density to explore the cyclicity of this island population, and use occurrence data as well as GPS collared hares to explore habitat quality and connectivity and survival to explore potential effects of wolf presence and absence.

The student will be advised by Dr. Jonathan Pauli and work closely with biologist and natural resources program manager Mark Romanski at Isle Royale National Park. This position will start in January 2023.

The research assistantship includes an annual stipend, tuition remission and health care benefits.
