About The McCall McCall MacBain Scholarships at McGill University

The McCall MacBain Scholarships at McGill are Canada’s first comprehensive, leadership-driven scholarships for master’s and professional degree studies. The scholarship program brings together a diverse group of scholars who aspire to lead with purpose – those who have demonstrated leadership potential and an inner drive to make a positive impact in other peoples’ lives.

The scholarships were announced in February 2019 by John and Marcy McCall MacBain, through a landmark gift of $200 million.

Overview of the Scholarship

McCall MacBain Scholars are asked to bring an openness and commitment to learning from one another. As scholars, you’ll come together as a cohort during annual summer retreats, bi-weekly seminars, monthly speaker series, and connect with global thinkers through an annual Principal’s Lecture, workshops, and other events. All while studying in one of the world’s greatest multicultural and multilingual cities.

Applications are now open for the first global cohort. Up to 20 Canadians (citizens, permanent residents, and refugees) and 10 international candidates will be chosen as McCall MacBain Scholars for September 2023 admission.

Scholarship Requirements – Scholarships in Canada for international students 2022 Masters

You must meet the following criteria to be considered for the McCall MacBain Scholarships:

  • You can apply for the McCall MacBain Scholarship in 2022 if you are planning to apply for Fall 2023 admission to a full-time master’s or second-entry professional undergraduate program at McGill University.

  • Programs with Summer 2023 admission only are also acceptable. 
  • The program must consist of 45 credits or more and take place primarily on McGill’s downtown or Macdonald campuses.
  • Applicants must meet the minimum degree and language requirements for McGill master’s program admission.
  • You must have a bachelor’s degree or its recognized equivalent, or be on track to complete it by August 2023.

Scholarship Benefits – Scholarships in Canada for international students 2022 Masters

The McCall MacBain Scholarship covers:

  • Tuition and fees for an eligible master’s or professional program
  • A living stipend of $2,000 per month during academic terms
  • A comprehensive enrichment program including mentorship, interdisciplinary learning, and access to a global community.

As a McCall MacBain Scholarship applicant, you are eligible for additional awards. Close to 80 finalist and regional awards will be offered to candidates who distinguish themselves during the interview process.

Canadian applicants will be eligible for up to 30 Finalist Awards ($10,000) and up to 28 Regional Awards ($5,000). Finalist Awards may be used for full-time master’s or professional studies at McGill, while Regional Awards are tenable at any public university in Canada.

All other applicants, including U.S. applicants, are eligible for 20 International Finalist Awards ($20,000). The International Finalist Awards may be used for full-time master’s or professional studies at McGill.

Concurrent support

McCall MacBain Scholars may accept up to $10,000 per year in additional merit-based funding. There is no limit to additional funding which McCall MacBain Scholars may accept based on financial need.

How To Apply McCall MacBain Scholarships at McGill University 2022

You must apply formally to McGill University and be accepted into an approved graduate program. You should familiarize yourself with the admission requirements for your selected program, including but not limited to GPA, well ahead of time.

  • Regional interviews: October 5 – November 8, 2022
  • Final interviews: March 8-12, 2023
  • Classes begin: September 2023

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must:

  • have a bachelor’s degree, or be on track to graduate with one, by August 2023
  • plan to apply for and begin an eligible full-time master’s or professional program at McGill University commencing in fall 2023*:
    • Eligible master’s programs
      • MA (Arts), MArch (Architecture), MATL (Arts in Teaching and Learning), MBA (Business Administration), MEd (Education), MEng (Engineering), MISt (Information Studies), MM (Management), MMus (Music), MPP (Public Policy), MSc (Science), MScA (Science, Applied), MScAPT (Science, Applied in Physical Therapy), MScAOT (Science, Applied in Occupational Therapy), MSW (Social Work), MUP (Urban Planning), LLM (Law), STM (Sacred Theology). Explore all programs on the McGill Graduate Admissions website. 
        • Second-entry undergraduate professional programs
        • Note: Graduate certificates, executive master’s programs, PhDs, joint degree programs, qualifying-year studies, and programs that take place outside of Montreal are examples of programs not covered by the McCall MacBain Scholarships.
