Why Elon Musk laid off nearly all Twitter Africa staff members.

Ghanaian Twitter employees have till 4th of December to evacuate the company’s premises. 

The business tycoon and Tesla CEO has only been in charge of Twitter for a week, and now it appears like Twitter’s operations in Africa are about to be discontinued.

The social media giant, under the direction of Elon Musk, has fired nearly all its staff in Ghana. According to a BBC source, all but one member of the twenty-person team have been laid off.

Ghanaian Twitter employees were alerted to prepare for a potential wave of layoffs as the warning signs were about to appear.

“The company is re-organizing its operations as a result of a need to reduce costs.” Read the email to staff from Fidelma Callaghan, Director People Service.

After being denied access to their jobs, the Ghanaian employees received termination emails in their personal accounts.

This action is the most recent in a string of like actions that have occurred since Elon bought Twitter.

Since becoming the company’s primary shareholder, Elon Musk has promised to cut down on costs, and one way he is doing so is by laying off employees.

There were about 7,000 people working for Twitter before Elon took over. Elon wants to reduce this figure by at least 50%. He made several of the company’s senior executives redundant as his first action as CEO of Twitter. Since then, he has gone on a firing spree and eliminated entire markets in order to realise his plan.

Recently, it was reported that he laid off about 90% of Twitter staff in India. The country had about 200 Twitter employees which was cut down to 12 over the weekend

The termination of employment notice warned staff not to “contact or deal with any customers, clients, authorities, banks, suppliers or other employees of the company and are required to inform the company if contacted”.

It goes without saying that the impacted workers are incensed, and as one employee from Ghana observed, the action was extremely demeaning.

The Ghanaian employees were notified that it would be their final day on the job on December 4 and cautioned against looking for work before then.

“You must ensure that the company knows where you will be and how you can be contacted during each working day to ensure your availability during the transition of responsibilities.”
